Traditional Kung Fu
 |
Kung fu is an
aerobic form of exercise that first involves learning form
sequences and evolves into a discipline of body and mind as theory
becomes an integral part of training. Sequences from the Hung Gar
system, one of the original Shaolin systems include empty hand,
application, and weapon forms. The Fu Hok style of Hung Gar
focuses on the unique characteristics of the tiger and the crane.
Traditional sequences have been preserved and strictly adhered to
while the principles of martial arts theory guide all movements.
Sequences contain soft and circular movements as well as the
vigorous and dynamic executions commonly found in Hung Gar. Our
focus on natural strength in execution is better suited for many
individuals, but its advantages are more evident in the advanced
stages of training as it further develops into superior power.
This system ultimately develops external and internal strength.
Youths and adults will benefit from this energetic program.

Tai
Chi
is a fluid sequence of movements choreographed in a low impact
routine. The practice of tai chi focuses on the mind/body
connection. This state of active meditation provides tranquility
and is achieved when movements are coordinated with mental
awareness. All movements are practiced in a relaxed manner.
Contrary to its gentle appearance, tai chi at its advanced stages
of training, becomes an effective martial art. The practice of tai
chi has evolved into a self-healing art due to its many
health-related benefits. This program is an effective
training method for stress relief, osteoarthritis, and provides
better concentration, circulation and balance in adults. |
Traditional
The traditional Wu Chien-Chuan long
sequence taught in this program focuses on smaller circular movements
and fluid transitions. The Wu style abides by the principles of martial
arts and a prerequisite for Tai Chi Push Hands, Tai Chi Theory and
Refinement, and Tai Chi Weapon.

Senior Tai Chi
Due to recent US medical studies on the effects of tai chi on the senior
population, this form of exercise has become increasingly popular.
Studies, thus far have documented better sense of balance, increased
circulation and lowered blood pressure in the senior population. A
study done at the Oregon Research Institute found that seniors were able
to regain some physical functioning lost to inactivity in just
three months. Another study from Soonchunhyang University in Korea have
found that after 12 weeks of tai chi, participants reported less
osteoarthritis symptoms. The Wu style short form is taught in this class
to members age 55 and over. This program provides all the benefits of
our Tai Chi program and includes all the essential postures. All
instructors from Calvin Chin's Martial Arts Academy are certified to
teach Senior Tai Chi. Our unique method is designed to achieve positive
results for a population with specific needs. We currently teach the Wu
short form at several on-site locations.

Tai Chi Push Hands
|
|
|
 |
Sometimes referred to as kneading hands or sticking hands,
this supplementary program is for adult members enrolled in
our intermediate Tai Chi program. Pushing Hands is for the
refinement of body postures and execution of movement. The
focus is on finding one's natural body strength through the
interpretation, redirection and absorption of force. Training
includes single and double pushing hands in fixed and moving
steps done with a partner. This is an essential exercise for
higher achievement in martial arts, and it is a prerequisite
for members preparing for contact competition.

Modern
Several modern tai chi sequences
are taught to supplement the traditional program, and may
be offered throughout the year as workshops or classes. In
particular, the 24-Movement Yang, the 45-Movement Wu and
the 42-Movement Combination forms are offered to student
enrolled in the traditional program. These
classes focus on learning the fundamentals and the
sequences.
Modern Tai Chi Fan
|
|
|
 |
This class focuses on learning a standard
competition form that has tai chi and kung fu influences.
The form is derived from several internal styles including
Yang, Wu and Chen, as well as sword techniques. Changquan,
Chaquan, Chuojiao and Nanquan are the external influences.
The fan form balances intrinsic movement with dynamic
spirited execution.

Sparring
 |
This supplementary program involves training and conditioning
one's mind and body for the endurance required in free sparring.
Sparring serves to test one's focus, concentration and
understanding, while providing a counter-point to the
predictability of pre-arranged drills and exercises. Youth and
adult members develop their abilities to exchange kicks and
punches in an unrehearsed, but controlled manner. This enhances
the understanding and capability to utilize the techniques learned
in forms and drills. Our chief instructor of Sparring is
Tasos Kalaitzidis. |
Lion Dance

 |
This art
form derives from traditional Chinese culture where the lion
warded off evil spirits to ensure prosperity
to villagers. Today it is commonly associated with the Chinese
Lunar New Year when lion dancers parade the streets. Working in
teams, members practice choreographed sequences with a costumed
lion head accompanied by members practicing traditional Chinese
instruments, including the drum, cymbals and gong. Youth and adult
members gain an appreciation for an ancient cultural art form.
This is an intriguing program, fun to learn and provides training
for performances.
We provide lion dance performances for
various celebrations and events.

Advanced Level Training
 |
In the Brown and
Black level classes, the hard and soft theories merge to produce
superior execution. Advanced
training facilitates a
better understanding of traditional guidelines, taking form to
its functional level. Specific training techniques derived
from the Mu Dong - Yat Hei
Ngm Hahng Morn system offer a means of developing further insight and
progression into the higher levels of martial arts. In addition to regular
classes, advanced level workshops are held throughout the year.
Calvin Chin does not limit
instruction to students in the Fu Hok Tai He Morn system. Advanced
students and instructors looking for additional insight into their
own system may
contact him for private instruction. |
Weapons
|
 |
Weapons training
begins at the intermediate level, when there is a better understanding
of the mechanics of movement and improved coordination. A weapon becomes
an extension of one's body and a further test of one's skill. This supplementary
program
enhances the understanding of the principles and concepts in martial arts
and ultimately develops better execution in all movements. Weapons are
taught in form sequences to responsible individuals, and training is optional
and at the discretion of the instructor. |
