Notice of Scholarship Award Recipients
We are pleased and proud to be giving out our first scholarship awards to two deserving applicants. After an extensive evaluation of all the qualified candidates, the selection board has chosen Clint Wu of Texas and Leslie Jaw of Massachusetts as the 2011-2012 recipients. Their excellent martial arts achievements and scholastic aptitude placed them as the winners of the Helen Gee Chin Scholarship Foundation awards. Each individual is receiving $2500.00 for his/her college education. Click here to read more about the Foundation.
Also, in June, journalist and fellow tai chi instructor, Violet Li, had a conversation with Sifu Calvin Chin about his late wife, Helen Gee Chin, and the scholarship fund he founded in her name. Click here to read her article published July 9, 2011, in the Tai Chi Examiner and her follow-up articles on winners Clint Wu and Leslie Jaw.

Sifu Chin’s students at CCMAA participate in numerous tournaments along the east coast and have won an impressive number of individual medals and team awards over the past several years. His performance team is as strong as it has ever been, with several long-term students achieving a higher level of learning.

Performance Team members commit to competing in at least two tournaments per year and being available for public performances upon request. The team participates in various Asian or international celebrations or cultural events, performing lion dances and martial arts demonstrations at schools, colleges and universities, corporations, restaurants and businesses.

Contact us for more information about having the team perform at your special event. Watch student performances on Youtube.

Girl Power

A daughter's martial arts expertise offers her parents peace-of-mind, yet many girls never get an opportunity to learn. Martial arts is male-dominated because many girls are not as attracted to brute force and combat techniques. At Calvin Chin's Martial Arts Academy, we have leveled the playing field for boys and girls, as our training method uses natural strength and proper alignment based on the principles of body mechanics. Skill gained through efficient use of force and total coordination is the reward.

On the surface, our  choreographed sequences reflect the exquisite artistry of the form, much like dance. Unlike dance, each movement carries an intent reflecting the functional aspect of a traditional martial art. Along with the practical knowledge gained, our training method, Fu Hok Tai He Morn is a great vehicle for developing a strong body and mind; lifting the inner spirit and enhancing self-awareness in maturing girls.

About the Foundation
The Helen Gee Chin Scholarship Foundation was formed to honor the memory of Helen Gee Chin, wife of Sifu Calvin Chin. Simo was beloved by her husband, the students of the Academy that she ran with him, and by the martial arts community as a whole. The Foundation is offering scholarships to encourage academic achievement by serious students of the Chinese martial arts.

This year's scholarship was open to high school students across the country who were entering college and met the minimum eligibility requirements: U.S. citizenship, five or more years of study in Chinese Martial Arts (Kung Fu, Wu Shu, or Tai Chi), and a "B" average grade or better. In 2012-2013, the scholarship may also be open to continuing college students enrolled in undergraduate studies.
Scholarship recipients are selected based on criteria such as martial arts study and achievement, academic achievement, a written essay, and participation and leadership in community and school activities. Further details about eligibility and the selection process can be found on the application form PDF. The 2011-2012 application can be downloaded from the Foundation's website for information only; the 2012-2013 application is not yet available.
